Blendtec Total Blenders Review

Blendtec Total BlendersThe Blendtec is a professional product, made to work, and it does. The power is great; the blades are very strong and take chopping ice everyday as does the motor. We are constantly making smoothies. The cycles programmed in can do a lot of "smoothing without thinking."

It's true, the documentation that comes with it is sparse, but if you feel it's necessary, find a book on blending, on Amazon. You cant judge a professional tool by a recipe book, they expect you to know how to use a blender.

I used to go through blenders in about three months, even the very high priced Braun went in less than 6 months (it cost a grand). My first Blendtec is now 2 years old, and all I had to replace is the jar. I now have a second, and won't buy another brand blender anymore.

Vita-Mix 1321 Professional Series, Ruby Review

Vita-Mix 1321 Professional Series, RubyI guess my husband got tired of me showing this to him and asking him to guess how much it costs because I got one for my birthday!I looked at this blender for over two years trying to justify buying it, after all it is just a blender, or so I thought.

This thing is phenomenal to say the least.I use it every day to make whole food vegetable drinks and fruit smoothies all in a minute or less. There is no struggling, no stray pieces of ice or fruit, and no fear that it's going to burn out like my other blenders did from the strain of trying to blend ice and frozen fruit over a period of time.I wouldn't have dreamed of putting cucumbers, carrots or broccoli in my old blender to make something drinkable but with this, everything is blended to a perfect consistency. You can even put whole ice cubes in it.

Want some hot tomato soup?Fine just put the ingredients and let it whir until the soup is piping hot!The blender is so powerful that the friction created actually heats the food. You can shorten the cooking time by preheating any liquids that are included in your recipe.

My Vita-Mix came with an extra container and blade that are used for grinding, a Whole Food Recipe cookbook (full of delicious recipes), a step by step Getting Started guide, a tamper, and a video. It does seem like a lot to spend for a blender but it's such a versatile product that it's well worth the money. You can use it to make dips and spreads, beverages, soups, sauces, fondues, salad dressings, batters, pureed foods, frozen desserts, and if you have the dry container and blade, you can grind your own grains.

If you are interested in including more fruits and vegetables into your diet, or want to get your kids to get more fruit and veggies, this is the way to go.Before I got this, I probably used my old blender to make smoothies once or twice a week. Now I use it daily so I leave it sitting on the counter, and it takes no time at all to make a quick breakfast drink before I go to work or a refreshing fruit smoothie drink when I come home. I'm not one to sit around nibbling on carrots and celery, but I will put them in the Vita-Mix for a refreshing low-calorie drink. There's a recipe in the cookbook using carrots that's truly delicious, Citrus Carrot Cocktail.I have never craved carrots but I do crave this drink and make it a lot!

Cleaning the container is easy.Just rinse it out with hot water or put a drop of dishwashing liquid in it along with a cup or so of water and run the machine on high for a few seconds and rinse it out. The container is made from polycarbonate material which apparently does not do well with the high Ph balance of automatic dishwasher soap so the manufacturer does not recommend washing the container in the dishwasher.

I looked at a couple of other high end blenders and found that some of them had a tendency to "walk" on the counter. This one has four thick rubber feet that keeps it in place when switching the blender to high. It's very loud but then it's very powerful. So powerful in fact, that it comes with a lid and lid plug that lock into place because once it's switched to high, the ingredients are moved with such force that it can knock a loose lid off of the container. The lid plug must always be used unless using the tamper in its place to make ice cream and nut butters.

To get the most out of this blender, make sure you read the instructions in the owner's manual and use the recipes in the cookbook until you get comfortable with using it.It's not complicated to use but it's extremly powerful and it's easy to over process your food items. For instance, if you're making a smoothie, the longer the machine runs, the hotter the ingredients will get and you could wind up with a lukewarm smoothie.

Consider adding the Tovolo ice pop molds as an accessory item to enjoy your favorite juice drink as an icy treat! Tovolo Green Shooting Star Pop Molds

Blendtec 40-601-04 64-Ounce Jar for Blendtec Blenders Review

Blendtec 40-601-04 64-Ounce Jar for Blendtec BlendersWe've had our blender for nearly 5 years, but won't be patronizing K-TEC anymore. The pitcher has a gear fitting on the bottom that tends to wear out every 2 years. They blamed us the first time because we had put the pitcher in the dish washer a couple of times. Thinking they were an honest business, we coughed up the $100 to have them ship a new pitcher. Around 2 years later, the exact same problem started happening. This time they admitted that their pitchers only last about 2 years with regular use.

Here are the symptoms:
* Grey powder between the pitcher and the base. That's powder from the metal shaft in the pitcher grinding up.
* Sharp grinding noise at the beginning right before the blades really spin.

Eventually the shaft fitting wears down completely and won't work anymore, requiring you to spend another $100 or more (as prices rise) every other year for a new pitcher.

Personally, I find this to be a total rip-off when old blenders that cost a fraction of the price and made in the late 70's are still able to work (albeit without the same amount of torque) for 30 years and this one can't even last 3!

Stay away from K-Tec and tell your friends to look for alternatives.

Vita-Prep 3 1005 Variable Speed Commercial Blender by Vita-Mix Review

Vita-Prep 3 1005 Variable Speed Commercial Blender by Vita-MixThe Vita-Prep is really a chef's dream come true. This thing is a workhorse. We've had it for 2 years now, and it still works just like the day we bought it.We love it.Smoothies are a breeze, and it will chop up stuff so efficiently that you could make juice out of just about anything.Whole Carrots = Carrot juice.Cabbage = Cabbage juice.Old laptop? No problem, laptop juice. This thing grinds up anything - Nuts into dust, ice into gelato. If money is an issue, the regular vita-mix is almost as good and the difference is not that significant.I decided to spend the extra money over the regular Vita-Mix because I figured that I'd have it for a long time (7 year guarantee) and I didn't want to look back on the purchase and wish and wonder about the nicer model. And, while 30-50% more money than the regular Vita-Mix, I wouldn't say it is really 50% better, but noticeably better for sure.I'm happy that I spent the extra money, but probably would have also been happy with the regular vita-mix.If money isn't an issue, or if you're somebody who just really appreciates the best, go ahead and buy this and you'll enjoy it for many many years.Whatever you do, make sure that the vita-mix model you buy has a variable speed control - don't buy their cheap one.

BlendTec HP3A Super Powerful Blender in Black - Brand New! Review

BlendTec HP3A Super Powerful Blender in Black - Brand NewI just got my Blendtec HP3A blender today and I could not be more thrilled. However, to be completely honest, I did experience a few hiccups in the first few cycles when I initially (and gleefully) jam packed the hopper with ice, placed the lid on top and turned it on full blast. The incredibly high-speed blades virtually vaporized the lower cubes and kept the rest of the ice from falling down into the madly whirring blades.

As I washed out the finely powered snow and frightened ice I considered my next attempt. Perhaps a little discouraged, but undaunted, I stuck some whole carrots and cucumbers in the container and pressed various buttons trying to get it to do what I anticipated it should do and in the way I thought it should do it. It didn't.

So, a bit grumpy, confused and mildly frustrated, I read the manuals (Mac users rarely do this). A short time later, thus armed with pertinent, and essential operational information I confidently approached my new, white Blendtec HP3A and found, once again, that all upsets are caused by a lack of communication. In this case, my upset could have been avoided if I had first taken the time to read the excellent and informative Blendtec Recipe Book (It's amazing how facile things become when you know what you're doing!).

Oh my god! This thing is sweet! Using the pulse and a touch of RO filtered water I made the best cucumber and carrot smoothie on the planet... and in seconds. Heck, I could have used a little hot water and had delicious carrot and cucumber and anything-else-I-wanted soup.

Inspired and greatly impressed, I went out and gathered a lot of the fabulous chickweed tops from my "garden" and made chickweed pesto with garlic, sunflower seeds, olive oil and Parmesan... Astounding, magnificent, awesome...

Then, from Bryan Au's "Raw in Ten Minutes" Raw Food In Ten Minutes: How to make the best Raw Organic Meals in just 10 Minutes!, I started with a quarter cup of water and made Pine nut, EVOO, turmeric and miso "cheese" and drizzled it over (potato peeler thin) slices of olive oil marinated raw yams... quite simply out-of-this-world amazing raw Mac and Cheese... and in just a very few minutes.

Cleanup could not be easier.Just rinse out the container and you are good to go. It's just that easy. No meticulous, laborious cleaning of all the parts, nooks and crannies found in other appliances like the GS-3000 juicer Tribest Green Star Juicer GS-3000 I use for green-leafy and wheatgrass juicing. The GS-3000 is still the best for high-quality wheatgrass juice but now I'll be getting all my fruit and vegetable juices plus the finely pulverized fiber, leaves, stems and seeds of the entire plant and all of it tastes unbelievably alive and delicious.

So, finally, this evening, elated after many joyous gastronomic experiments and culinary peak experiences, I sit here quite sated and completely satisfied. Enough so that I felt compelled to write this review. This blender has opened up infinite possibilities for creation of silky smooth preparations of fruits, nuts, berries and veggies all automatically blended to perfection in my Blendtec blender. I was a skeptic, and I certainly had my doubts, but now I'm a true believer.

I guess I could go on and on trying to explain what it felt like to experience all the exquisite flavors, creamy textures and high-tech capabilities of my Blendtec HP3A blender but that would be like standing on the back of a whale fishing for minnows. If you are into raw food preparation the Blendtec HP3A is an immensely powerful machine that will swing wide open the gates to a more vital and healthy world in ways you cannot possibly imagine, but will quite thoroughly enjoy.

BlendTec HP3A Blender - Ultra Powerful - Red Review

BlendTec HP3A Blender - Ultra Powerful - RedThis will probably sound shallow to the blender connoisseurs out there, but after reading the reviews comparing and contrasting Blendtec with Vitamix (its main rival), I chose the Blendtec in the end because I couldn't stand the idea of paying a fortune for the Vitamix that is (in my opinion) really unattractive :).The Blendtec, on the other hand, is fantastically sharp-looking on the counter.I use it daily and it performs like a dream. It is goof-proof.Decide what you want it to do and push the corresponding button. It turns itself off when it's done, and counts down the seconds digitally while it's working.

I use it almost solely for smoothies and it is every bit as good as the Vitamix that I borrowed from a friend for several weeks when I was test-driving these (expensive) machines. When you're spending so much cash on a kitchen appliance, you don't want buyer's remorse.I was thrilled to discover the Blendtec right before I was about to plunk down $500 for a Vitamix.

Another perhaps shallow reason I chose Blendtec over Vitamix is that the Vitamix is too tall to rest under my upper cabinets, whereas the Blendtec is just the right height. But if you think about it, this is not a trivial difference, because one is much more likely to use a machine that doesn't have to dragged out of hiding.

In my situation, the decision to get rid of my perfectly operable and nearly-new Cuisinart and to pay so much for the Blendtec was a matter of health.I have a young husband with stage IV cancer and I thought it was imperative to have a top-notch machine to make healthful smoothies and shakes into which I could add supplements like protein powders and extra vitamins and minerals. The Cuisinart, while a nice machine, just couldn't touch what the Blendtec does, which is make smooth as silk drinks without any grit or unblended material at the bottom.

According to the manual, this machine can also create ice cream and warmed soup.Once my husband is cured, I will branch out beyond smoothies and hope to enjoy many years of fun and experimentation with this gorgeous workhorse!

Jack LaLanne Health Master 100 Blender Review

Jack LaLanne Health Master 100 BlenderThis will have to be short and sweet due to limited time but I had to offer my opinion.
I have been looking for a whole food/ raw food blender for about a month.I have already returned 3 blenders to other stores, as eating whole foods and raw foods require more power then your typical walmart/ kmart blender can offer. The Bullet was a joke. The cuisinart, such a disappointment.
First, I must say that I am a bargain shopper.Although I do love high end quality, I very rarely pay top dollar for anything. If I can buy a top quality item used, I will.A Vitamix blender would have been the ideal for me, but I simply wasnt willing to lay down 400-500 dollars.Nor was I about to even go used on it, which would have run me about 250.00.Call me cheap, but I knew there had to be something out there that at least came close to it.
I happened upon the Healhmaster 100 online.I compared the wattage, horse power, and style (with tamper) to its rival, the Vitamix.Mind you of course, if I was a wealthy person and money was no object, I would be writing a review of a vitamix right now. But, since I already spent so much money on a grain mill, Bosch mixer and other neccessities I was forced to bargain shop.
I am NOT sorry. This machine is awesome and does not struggle as the others did.I can make frozen fruit ice cream with no problem and no stuggles.Within a minute or two, I was enjoying creamy fresh fruit ice cream. This is a big deal for me, as I have been trying to make this particular recipe for about a month with no success. The other blenders struggled and could not achieve the creamy texture I wanted.I had to continually turn them off, use a wooden spoon to push the mixture down and pulse again for only a second, then turn it off again. This went on and on and took forever.
For the money, the HM 100 is a powerful machine that can handle very challanging raw food recipes.I have seen the vitamix being used at a raw food class, and the HM100 compares in style and power.
I hope this review helps other indecisive consumers who are looking for a less expensive option to something like the Vitamix.
If you looking for a high end blender with a lower end price tag, you might want to consider trying this out.
UPDATE:I have been using this machine for 1 month on mostly raw style recipes, green smoothies, hummus and nut butters and so on.I am so happy with it.It has completely and soundly completed any task I have stuffed it with!!
ANOTHER UPDATE:Still kicking butt!!I have had no problems with leakage, as others say they have.Hope I never do.I have used this machine almost daily for 4-5 months, making many raw recipes and green smoothies.IT STILL ROCKS!!

Vita-Mix 1300 TurboBlend 4500 Review

Vita-Mix 1300 TurboBlend 4500I have owned the Vita-Mix Super 5000 since 1997, and I love it. I can grind flour, make juice, soup, ice cream (the fruit smoothies I make with this are to die for)--in short, every kind of food processing you can imagine. This baby is built to last and has a 7-year warranty.

In 2004, a couple weeks after the 7 years were up, I was very upset when it broke down. I thought, "Isn't that just the way these things tend to go with warranties?" I searched for Vita-Mix on the web (the URL is their name, and there is a link on this page, to them, too). I clicked on the button for service, got their 800 number, and called them at 6:00 p.m. Eastern time, and they were there. The service rep was friendly and knowledgeable. She asked me to describe in detail the symptoms of my ailing Vita-Mix. She then said, when I asked about it, that even though I was past the window period to do so, the company would still allow me to buy a three-year extended warranty for $120. I jumped at that, and found out that I could use it to cover the parts (and shipping) to fix the problem. She said I needed an "assembly piece" that sold for $75 without a warranty, a "drive socket" worth $12.00 and the shipping of $9.95 would be no charge to me. She said she was including a small wrench and instructions and I can fix it myself. So right off the bat I used most of the $120 to fix my first problem.

I've never seen anything like this kind of service. When our tabletop water distiller broke, we had to send it in for warrantied repair, which cost $50 shipping (we paid), and weeks to get back. I think shipping the Vita-Mix to the company might have cost nearly that much, so I was delighted to have this option of getting the parts in 10 days to fix it myself and have my beloved Vita-Mix back working within a week and a half.

If you are ever in the market for a food processor that is professional quality that works great with amazing customer service, this is it. The price is very competitive for what you get, and the product itself is fabulous. (Only one tiny little caveat--which is true for =any= blender--wear earplugs when you do the very high speeds or you could hurt your ears.)

Update March 23, 2009: I've owned the Vita-Mix 12 years now, and I still love it! See my comment to this review with today's date which contains information on my experiences with the sales personnel of the Vita-Mix company today.

All Wheat is Not EqualWe have had the experience of growing wheatgrass and being in the commercial wheatgrass business over the last 14 years. During that time we have experienced many different kinds of wheat. We have used wheat from Texas, Utah, Montana, California, and Israel both organic and non organic. There are two kinds of wheat one can buy: chemical free and certified organic. Most wheat is chemical free in that the farmer might or might not use an herbicide to control the weeds in his fields. If he uses chemicals on the wheat, it will cause a distinct taste in the bread thus no chemicals are used on the wheat itself. Then there is certified organic: Certified organic is the same as chemical free except the wheat is grown by farmers who have not used chemicals on their land for over ten years. The difference is the certification. If a wheat is organic and you grow it in organic soil, it will have the necessary organisms in the soil to help it assimilate the minerals properly. Organic produce should also have the organism on it which produces cobalamin (B-12)In our search to give you the very best wheat we have done two things. We now handle an chemical free red spring wheat, from Northern Idaho. For those who want certified organic, we have a red spring QAI Certified Organic. QAI is Quality Assurance International, who give independent, third party certification of organic food systems and have been the foundation of domestic and international organic food trade.

Vitamix Turbo Blend 4500 Countertop Blender with 2 HP Motor Review

Vitamix Turbo Blend 4500 Countertop Blender with 2+ HP MotorI have had my Vitamix 5000 for 5 and 1/2 years and could not be happier with it. Not only does it blend full frozen bananas (see other review), the powerful motor can do a lot more.

We use our Vitamix primarily for smoothies and milkshakes, and have learned that as long as there is some liquid in the container with the ice cubes and frozen bananas it will blend all into a smooth drink with ease.

The machine is loud for sure, not something you can hold conversation over, but we've noted that it blends so quickly, that the moments it takes to liquify are over before we've forgotten what we would have said anyway.

Clean up is also amazing with the Vitamix. As the Vitamix reps demonstrate, all we've done to clean it up after is wipe down any smoothie residue on the outside of the spout, fill container 1/3-ish of the way up with warm/hot water and a drip of soap, then blend on high for 30-ish seconds. Every month or so I DO wash a bit more thouroughly with maybe a drip of bleach and a scrub brush. One thing to consider though, is the longer you leave your container dirty the harder it will be to clean after. If you just rinse right away, you're golden.

I cannot rave more highly about this machine. I'm sure that the multiple hundred dollar price tag is a turn off to most if not all, but consider the time saved as well as more options for healthy beverage alternatives! We've loved our Vitamix and you will too!

HealthMaster LWHM Living Well/Montel 1100-Watt 2-Quart Fruit-and-Vegetable Emulsifier Review

HealthMaster LWHM Living Well/Montel 1100-Watt 2-Quart Fruit-and-Vegetable EmulsifierUPDATE 3/19/2010:This unit has been out for awhile now, and the complaints are rising steadily, not only here at Amazon, but other sites as well.QVC lowered their price and negative reviews are appearing there as well. The complaints, that surface either immediately or within 6 months are:Leaking containers, motors that burn out emitting an electrical odor that sometimes will trip your circuit breakers, container lid is hard to remove and put back on, terrible customer service (from the healthmaster site and not amazon), and now, a poster said that the container is not safe to use because of the plastic, and will emit chemicals into your food! Please, do your research before purchasing this machine. There is even a video on the Vitamix website of a woman who went to her local TV station for help with getting her money back from healthmaster it showed how it took a very strong person to remove the lid, and the motor was fried! The TV station reporter was shown on hold for 20 minutes!

MY ORIGINAL REVIEW :This unit is a Jack La Lanne Healthmaster, redesigned with a new digital display, and costs more.I owned the Jack La Lanne, and within 6 months, the bearings stripped, and a rust color was dripping from the container, with the food being tainted by rust on the blades.I threw it out and bought a Vitamix. The same problems are beginning to surface with this machine problems develop either immediately or within 3 to 6 months of use.A neighbor, who loves Montel, and ignored my warnings, bought this machine through the healthmaster website.Within 3 days, the motor burnt out.It took several weeks to get a replacement.Upon receiving the replacement, the motor burnt out again. She returned the unit for a refund, and has yet to receive it. She paid for the extra warranty, and HM did not pay for the shipping to return it (the warranty is bogus, if you read the fine print, the warranty can be voided), YOU have to pay for it. This machine does what it is supposed to do, it makes good smoothies, but simply isn't powerful enough and cannot handle the strain.Other reviews on other sites state the same thing. The infomercial, has the same woman that was on the infomercial for jack la lanne. If you must, buy it here, the return policy is much better, however I recommend that you spend a few extra bucks and get a Vitamix, which I have had for several years now with absolutely no problems, and has a automatic 7 year guarantee, excellent customer service, and they pay for shipping. You get what you pay for.Give yourself, or your loved ones, a better machine than this, especially for xmas.

Product Description:
Equipped with an 1100-watt almost-2-horsepower motor, this fruit-and-vegetable emulsifier goes way beyond a standard countertop blender. What can't be done with the machine might be easier to mention, but without intending to overwhelm, here's a short list of what it can do: juice whole fruits and vegetables, make ice cream and frozen yogurt, simmer soup, create dips and salsas, blend fruit smoothies and milkshakes, grind nut butters, whisk salad dressings, melt chocolate and cheese, and puree party dips, or use it to grate cheese from coarse to fine, whip cream, mince garlic and herbs, mash potatoes, chop veggies, dice onions, cream butter, aerate egg whites for fluffy meringues, mix up drinks and cocktails, or crush up to 2 quarts of ice in seconds. The versatile appliance replaces 20 different kitchen appliances, including a blender, a mini chopper, a 10-inch cook's knife, a coffee and spice mill/grinder, a cheese/veggie grater, a juicer, a meat grinder, a snow-cone maker, an ice-cream maker, a smoothie maker, a soy milk maker, and a latte whip or other milk-frothing device--just to name a few. The kitchen appliance features a digital emulsification system that pulverizes and liquefies whole fruits and vegetables in seconds, and its centrifugal friction "cooks" foods naturally, retaining the vitamins, minerals, antioxidants, and phyto-nutrients. Choose from a variety of one-touch controls, including eight variable speed settings. The machine also provides commercial-grade wet/dry culinary blades that never need replacing and an extra-large 70-ounce (2 quart) polycarbonate-plastic pitcher with measuring marks up the side, a generous easy-grip handle, a drip-free pouring spout, and a secure-fitting lid with a built-in safety valve that releases steam and pressure when making soup. For added safety, the unit must be properly assembled or it will not turn on; it will also turn off automatically to prevent overheating. Dishwasher-safe parts make cleanup a snap, and four bonus recipe books and a healthy eating plan come included. Endorsed by Montel Williams, the fruit-and-vegetable emulsifier measures 21 by 12-3/4 by 16-1/2 inches and carries a 60-day warranty with a 100-year warranty on the motor.

Weston Cast Iron Wheat Grass Juicer Review

Weston Cast Iron Wheat Grass JuicerIt's a good juicer. It's heavy, but it's cast iron so it's expected. I use it in my dorm for wheatgrass that I grow and it's great. Just make sure you wash it immediately, you wouldn't want it to get rusty, right?

All the parts work well. It even has an attachable rubber "foot" so you don't scratch things or maybe it's for better grip. I'm a 19 year old girl and I can crank it just fine.

It's not beautiful but it gets the job done. :)

I'm going to try apples and celery and other fruits and veggies sometime.

Tribest Green Star 3000 Deluxe Juicer/Juice Extractor Review

Tribest Green Star 3000 Deluxe Juicer/Juice ExtractorThis juicer definitely produced the best juice. Put cool veggies and fruit in from the frig and get cool juice out, and the quality is outstanding. We have been juicing now for a month and we feel so much better. Because of the energy I get from the juice in the mornings, I was actually able to quick drinking coffee! While one of the other reviewers was correct in that this juicer does take up some counter space, the parts are definitely not made cheaply - at least on our model (the Green Star 3000). After all the junk that is being made these days, this machine is made of quality parts, and is actually a little bit heavy (but it has a nice handle).

We love our machine. We love having the best possible product coming out of our machine. The only drawback, and it is a slight one, it that the machine does take a few minutes to clean, and should be cleaned immediately after use. The parts are good quality, strong and durable, but not for use in a dishwasher (according to the manuafacturer.) If it were not for this, I wouldhave given it five stars easily.

One hint: Plan you juicing ahead of time. Because the machine takes 4-5 minutes (for two people) to clean, and because of the quality of the product (the magnets and low speed and low heat which does allow the juice to remain fresh longer) we usually juice enough for two mornings at a time (for two adults). All told, between cutting up the veggies and fruit, the actual juicing, and cleaning up,it takes about 20 minutes every other day. This may seem a little long just for juicing, but for our health, it is way worth it!!

With their ease of use and simple clean up, Green Star Juice Extractors and Food Processors are award-winning machines of unsurpassed quality. The Green Star features magnetic and bioceramic technology in its Twin Gear juicing system that allows it to extract juice of higher nutritional content. The magnets create a focused magnetic field that rearranges clusters of water so that it can latch on to more the valuable vitamins, minerals, and other nutrients and extract it into your juice. The bioceramic material inside the Twin Gears utilize the kinetic energy of the turning gears to emit far-infrared - the wavelength at which water and all organic material naturally oscillates. This has a stabilizing effect on your juice by delaying oxidation and allows your extracted juice to remain fresher longer. Independent laboratories have done extensive testing on the juice yielded from the Green Star and compared it with other leading juicing technologies and have found that the juice coming from the Green Star's Twin Gear juicing system was of superior nutritional content and had important characteristics lengthening the stability of the juice and its enzyme

Lexen Healthy Juicer - Manual Wheatgrass Juice Extractor Review

Lexen Healthy Juicer - Manual Wheatgrass Juice ExtractorPros:
-----
1. Very compact: It takes less counter/table space than a small plate. Most of the electrics (except the L'Equip mini and the Waring JEX 328) are major space hogs.

2. Very efficient: Masticating juicers extract more juice than the centrifugal models. Perhaps more importantly, they do a better job of crushing tough plant cell walls and releasing enzymes - think minced garlic versus chopped garlic. (Whether or how much added health benefits this results in, depends on what you juice. It's hard to get good info on this, but plant enzymes typically help in breakdown and better absorption of nutrients.)

3. Cheap (Check out their Ebay listing - it's $10 cheaper over there.) If you don't want to drop upwards of $250 on an electric masticating juicer, or aren't sure whether you'll stick to it, this one's worth a try.

4. Easy to clean

Cons:
-----
1. The hopper's a bit small, which means you'll be reloading frequently. This seems to be the trouble with masticating juicers in general (including the electrics), but the Z-star manual juicer (also available on amazon, though at twice the cost) has a somewhat bigger hopper.
UPDATE: see effort section below.

2. As I haven't used this long enough, I can't say how durable it is, though it seems very tough and well-made. (The auger tip and the surface it crushes against are both stainless steel, and all the rest is polycarbonate.)

Juicing effort:
---------------
Turning the handle: Effortless for leafy veggies, very little effort for carrots and firm veggies, provided you cut them into smaller pieces first. Don't expect to be able to throw a whole carrot or radish in. The reviewer that claims that you need to be a weightlifter to turn this thing was funny, but wildly off the mark.
UPDATE: Curiously enough, on trying red cabbage, the juicer groans, esp. with largish pieces. I noticed that the juicing effort is quite sensitive to the size of the pieces - with smallish pieces, not only is less turning effort required, but the produce doesn't need pushing either. This lets you feed and crank the handle at the same time, making the process faster.
All in all, though, this idiosyncracy counts as a negative point, and I'm lowering my rating to 4 stars.
UPDATE 2: When juicing cabbage, drizzle a little bit of olive oil over the chopped cabbage - this completely eliminates the groaning (which happens due to friction between the rubbery leaves and the juicer body).

Cleaning: better than the electrics in this department because of fewer parts and simpler design. Cleanup is a major part of juicing effort, so I count this as a pro.

Cutting: For firm veggies, you'll have to cut them into smaller parts (no perfect julienne required; just a quick, sloppy chop would do.) Even so, this adds a little bit to the effort, so if you primarily want to juice firm veggies, you should look at an electric.

Setup: Very easy (again, from the simpler design).

Breville 800JEXL Juice Fountain Elite 1000-Watt Juice Extractor Review

Breville 800JEXL Juice Fountain Elite 1000-Watt Juice ExtractorWe just bought this juicer on Amazon, using the $25 discount and the free shipping.Made it the best price on the internet when we bought it first of December 2005.Before commenting on the juicer, let me tell you what we used before this juicer arrived.

We have a top of the line Green Power juicer. If you know juicers, you know this is one of the best. We've been juicing with it on a daily basis for 10 years and it is still going strong. It has a high juice yield (dry pulp), can juice grasses and greens efficiently (wheatgrass, parsley, spinach etc.), and low temperatures and rpm minimize oxidation so juice lasts a long time.Other advantages are claimed, but these are the biggest for us.

A well-known downside to twin-screw type juicers like the Green Power is that it takes quite a bit of force to push items like carrots into the juicer, because there is no cutting blade action, just the gripping/squeezing action of the twin screws.Frankly, after 10 years of pushing hard on this thing, we've gotten tired of it, even though it makes great juice. We also don't like the 1.5" square opening which requires us to cut up apples and large carrots before feeding them.Cleanup isn't too bad, but not great either.I decided to buy a juicer that would make good juice in reasonably high yields but with emphasis on speed and ease of use.My intent was that this juicer would complement but not replace the Green Power.

Well, after doing a lot of research and reading the reviews here and elsewhere, I decided to buy the Breville 800JEXL Juice Fountain Elite. The most attractive claims for this juicer were the fast juicing speed, relatively easy cleanup, and the widemouth (3" round) opening. The stainless steel exterior was also a plus, as the Green Power's white plastic parts became stained long ago (vegetable juices can do that!).

The biggest concern with this juicer was the limited warranty period (1-3 years) compared to other juicers in its class (which go as high as 15 years).Phone discussion with a vendor indicated concerns about the lifetime of the motor, though his experience was not with the Elite, which has a new, more powerful motor.I also had some concerns about how efficiently it would extract juice compared to our Green Power, how it would work on spinach and other leafy vegetables, and whether the juice would stay fresh as long.

Though I'd have preferred a better warranty, I decided the features were attractive enough to try it.It is a lot of money to throw away if it fails just after the warranty. But if the ease of juicing was as good as claimed, it would almost be worth it!

The new juicer arrived a few days ago.It was simple to put together. The instructions were clearly written. After washing the parts in the dishwasher (yes, they are dishwasher proof), my wife and I proceeded to make one of our standards, carrot-apple-celery.Boy, were we blown away! This juicer met our expectations and more!

Our apples were large, so we had to quarter them despite the 3" opening. However, in the Green Power we have to cut them into 9 pieces, requiring 4 knife cuts instead of 2 for the Juice Fountain. The apples fed into the juicer easily and very rapidly.Apples feed into the Green Power without too much force, but can be hard to feed because of the pulp they generate (you make apple sauce in the screw feed area and it backs up the chute). We usually use Granny Smiths to minimize that problem on the Green Power, but the Juice Fountain had no problem at all, so I tried some Galas and they also fed in beautifully. In the Green Power, you have to alternate carrots with soft fruits to avoid stalling the screw conveying action; there was no such need with the Juice Fountain. For ease of feeding pulp-producing or juicy fruits and vegetables, I give the Juice Fountain an "A+" compared to the Green Power a "C".

We then fed in the celery. In the Green Power, celery strings wrap around the end of the screws and plug the end plug. The cutting/centrifugal juicing mechanism of the Juice Fountain eliminates such issues completely. The celery fed in very easily and produced plenty of juice. In the Green Power, celery that is small or somewhat old (limp) can be hard to feed into the chute since the stalks don't feed into the screw that easily and the plastic crammer tends to jam them in the chute rather than push them into the screws. In the Juice Fountain, celery of all sizes, including tips and leaves, fed in easily. For ease of handling fibrous vegetables or long, flexible vegetables, I give the Juice Fountain an A+ and the Green Power a B.

Already by this time I knew the Juice Fountain really does make juice fast!I couldn't wait to try the carrots. We put them in whole (minus the cut off tops) and for smaller ones, in bunches of 2 or 3.They just zipped into the juicer! The instruction manual says that juice yield is higher if you feed them slowly, so we didn't push the limits of feed speed, but suffice it to say, it was MUCH faster than the Green Power, on the order of just a few seconds.Furthermore, there was almost no force required to push the carrots in, a welcome change from the 2-handed, "lean your body weight into it" effort required on the Green Power. What a delight this was!For speed of juicing, we give the Juice Fountain an A+ and the Green Power a C.For ease of feeding, we give the Juice Fountain an A+ and the Green Power a D.

We were having so much fun we grabbed more carrots and shoved them in, and then disaster happened! With the juicer still outputting juice, the juice container (pitcher) overflowed and bright orange carrot juice poured out over the countertops and down the face of our painted white cabinets, staining them orange. We were having so much fun juicing, and it was happening so quickly compared to the Green Power, that we didn't realize how much juice we had made in so short a time!Had we been using the Green Power, we'd just be getting started.Oh well.We hit the well-marked red STOP button on the front of the juicer, then sponged up the mess, using 409 cleaner to get the orange stains off the cabinets. The stainless steel Juice Fountain Elite cleaned up easily.

We emptied the pitcher and then finished our juicing, making mental note to remember how rapidly this thing produces juice and to not exceed the pitcher's MAX level marking in the future.

What about noise during juicing? Many have suggested that the Juice Fountain is noisy. My wife and I didn't find it so at all.We have a flour mill that sounds like a jet plane! We have a Vitamix blender that makes a racket (on highest speed).By comparison, this juicer is quiet. Not as quiet as the Green Power, but not at all annoying. For noise, we'd give the Juice Fountain a B and the Green Power an A, with a Vitamix blender a D and our grain mill an F (requiring ear plugs).

Now for the taste test. The defrother on the pitcher seems to work OK.The juice was excellent, not oxidized tasting in comparison to juice from the Green Power. In fact, maybe it was my imagination, but I think it tasted fresher. The Green Power may use lower speed and incorporate less air, but because it takes so long to make the juice, by the time you are finished, the first part of the batch may be 20 minutes old. With the Juice Fountain, it may be just a couple minutes old.For taste, I give the Juice Fountain an A+, the Green Power an A.

We dislike pulp in our vegetable juices. With the Green Power, the amount of pulp in the juice is not bad, but we still have to strain it through a wire screen strainer to get pulp-free juice. With carrot-Granny Smith apple-celery, a quart of juice will leave at least 2-3 tablespoons of pulp in the strainer.By contrast, the Juice Fountain juice was virtually pulp-free.We didn't bother straining it, there was so little. This is great, since wire screens tend to plug and back-up, and are a pain to keep clean.Yet another time saver for both juice production and clean-up!For pulp-free juice, Juice Fountain merits an A+ and Green Power gets a B.

OK.What about juicing efficiency?I don't have any hard numbers on this, but the pulp felt about as dry as that from the Green Power. That suggests that the efficiency was similar. The Green Power is claimed to have one of the highest extraction efficiencies of any juicer on the market, short of the Walker or other press-type juicers. That seems to be a fair claim. However, actual practice may vary. The dryness of pulp in the Green Power is controlled by how far you screw in the end plug, which creates back pressure and controls the pulp flow rate.If you screw it all the way in, you get very dry pulp. However, the juicer feeds poorly, and if you have anything like apples you'll just backup the pulp into the chute and the screw won't be able to generate enough pumping pressure to overcome the backpressure of the plug. Thus, in practice, we kept the end plug of our Green Power screwed out about a half turn. This resulted in better screw feed action but somewhat wetter pulp. Some Green Power users will push the pulp through a second time to get higher yields, but we didn't bother.By comparison, the Juice Fountain seems to make pulp of similar dryness to what we were getting on the Green Power, but without having to mess with optimum end plug settings, screw backups, or feeding pulp through a second time. Thus, I give both Green Power and Juice Fountain an A for efficiency, but the Juice Fountain gets there more easily.Perhaps in the future I'll do a more quantitative comparison.

Cleanup was a breeze.I just rinsed all the top parts off and put them in a drying rack or the dishwasher. The wire mesh and...Read more›

Product Description:
Make great tasting, fresh fruit or vegetable drinks at home with this efficient juicer from Breville. The unit's Italian-made 1000-watt (1-1/3 horsepower) motor delivers ultimate power and durability, while its built-in electronic "smart chip" regulates power to the blades, depending on the juicing load. The juicer's patented, dual-action, diagonal knife blades are encased by a titanium-plated stainless-steel cutting disc, which features 115 individual knives to grind pulp into the tiniest particles. The machine's circular three-inch stainless feed tube easily processes whole fruits and vegetables without pre-cutting, slicing, or dicing. The patented design centers the feed tube directly over the cutter, providing the strength to process large quantities of fruit and vegetables instantly.
For harder fruits and vegetables, like apples and carrots, the juicer's high-speed delivers a crushing 13,000 RPM, approximately three times faster than most other machines. At such speeds, the pulp particles are "g-forced" against the stainless-steel micro-mesh filter with tremendous pressure to squeeze out as much juice as possible. An 8-ounce glass of juice from whole apples takes less than five seconds. Low-speed spins at a whisper-quiet 6500 RPMs, which delivers the best results when juicing leafy vegetables, or softer fruits such as watermelons or oranges. A 34-fluid-ounce (1 liter) juicing pitcher, a large 100-fluid-ounce pulp container, and a user manual with recipes are included, and dishwasher-safe parts make cleanup a snap. Housed in beautiful die-cast stainless steel, the juicer measures 8 by 9 by 19 inches and carries a one-year warranty.
